Clarinet & Piano Music – New 21st Century Romantic Music

New romantic clarinet and piano music, written in the 21st century. Composer Andrew Feazelle writes music influenced by the early 20th century British school of music. Hints of Bax, Finzi, Vaughan Williams, and Walton can be found in his music. Feazelle played the clarinet earlier in life.

Wooded Walk Upon the Advancement of the Autumn Equinox for Clarinet & Piano

Description of this new clarinet and piano piece:

‘Wooded Walk Upon the Advancement of the Autumn Equinox’ is a short piece for clarinet and pianoforte of approximately four minutes and twenty seconds of length, written in the late summer of two thousand and thirteen by the composer Andrew Feazelle.

Reflections of Bax, Vaughn Williams, and Walton are displayed as the composer describes a walk – companionless; perhaps comfortless – along a deep wooded path, cooled from the advent of the fall season.

Brief moments of excitement, of romance and nobility do occur, yet there is always present the capitulation and reconversion to darkness. The sun is of little warmth, what little there is through the leaves actively dressing for the equinox, that but wisps of chilled air, dilute with the smell of chimney smoke, keep the walker roused, contriving thoughts of a hot, savory meal and a fireplace to have it by.’

Pastoral Music for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano

Written over three days in November 2020, Pastoral Music for Clarinet, Cello, and Piano is a continuance of Feazelle’s practice of neoromantic chamber music miniaturization for the sake of creating a library of accent pieces to be performed around larger scale, traditional classical works.

The piece clocks in at three and a half minute’s time. Further it represents the composer’s third minor voyage on writing for the clarinet – one of the more familiar wind instruments in his chamber catalog, he having spent some time with it as a young student of music.

FAQ’s regarding clarinet and piano

Below are frequently asked questions regarding clarinet and piano:

How to translate piano music to clarinet

To translate piano music to clarinet, find the melody in the piano part, then transpose that up a major second interval. This method makes it possible that the clarinet can play along with the piano. For the convenience of the clarinet player, you can sometimes also add in the equivalent of two sharps to the key signature, based on the original piano key signature.

Sometimes this involves simply adding two sharps, sometimes it means reducing two flats, or further it could obligate you to add two sharps, but then find the simpler equivalent to that key signature. For example, if the piano melody had a key signature of C# major, then instead of making the clarinet part D# major, you should simplify it to E flat major.

If you need a more detailed explanation of this transposition process, with music examples, check out my article on ‘How to Translate Piano Music to Clarinet‘.

Is clarinet sheet music the same as piano?

No, clarinet sheet music is not the same as piano sheet music. The clarinet must be transposed up a major second for it to play a line in a piano piece in an enharmonic fashion, i.e. preserving the same pitches as that piano line. For the convenience of the clarinet player, you would also need to add the equivalent of two sharps to the clarinet music you transposed. This was discussed in the FAQ question directly above this one.

Where can I get free clarinet sheet music?

You can get free clarinet sheet music one this page by clicking the link above, on this page, to the free PDF score of Andrew Feazelle’s Wooded Walk Upon the Advancement of the Autumn Equinox for Clarinet & Piano. Otherwise you can visit the Clarinet Institute of Los Angeles website where they provide links to free clarinet sheet music, featuring Feazelle and other composers’ works.

Why is the B flat on a clarinet?

The B is flat on a clarinet because it’s a transposing instrument. Parts written for the standard B flat clarinet must be transposed a major second upward on clarinet notation, in order for the original pitches to be preserved. This allows the clarinet’s most used range to sit squarely in and around its music notation staves, not going too far below them, and not too far above, to make the music more readable, and more efficiently placed on sheet music that involves multiple staves on each page.
